Personal Training FAQ's

Who needs a Personal Trainer?
Whether you are just beginning an exercise program, bored with your routine, or simply "stuck" and not getting results you can benefit from hiring a trainer. A good trainer will teach you proper techniques and show you new exercises to add to your routine.

Your trainer will safely push you a little harder, keep you accountable, and help you stay focused on your end goal. All of this adds to your success!

Many baby-boomers and senior citizens are becoming first-time exercisers as they see a decline in appearance, health, or physical ability, or due to their physician's advice. This group will see tremendous health benefits by becoming involved in an exercise program. Be sure to find a qualified trainer to meet your specific needs.

Remember the Benefits of Exercise: Increases bone density, flexibility, strength and endurance. Reduces the symptoms of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, arthritis and back pain.

What does a Personal Trainer Do?
A good trainer takes a number of steps before starting the client on an exercise program.

  •
  • Performs a Health Screening to determine your exercise goals, and health, lifestyle, and exercise history.
  •
  • Recommends a physicians clearance if certain risk factors exist.
  •
  • Determines and conducts appropriate fitness tests to identify your current fitness level.
  •
  • Clarifies and helps you set realistic, attainable goals.
  •
  • Develops a fitness program to meet your fitness goals.

During the training session the Trainer gives you complete attention answering questions, instructing and monitoring your performance. Depending on program adherence the trainer will conduct fitness tests again to monitor progress and modify the program.

How often do I need to work with a Personal Trainer?
Talk to your trainer about your self-motivation, and time and financial constraints. Together you should develop a plan for success that suits your needs.

What do I look for in a Personal Trainer?
Use your best judgment! You should feel completely comfortable with your trainer. The trainer should demonstrate professionalism and practice what is mentioned in this article.

Look for Credentials. It takes more than a good physique to be a knowledgeable trainer. Before you invest your time, money and health, choose a Fitness Professional with widely respected credentials. Look for someone that holds a nationally accredited certification. This type of certification is awarded only after passing a rigorous and challenging exam. It indicates the Fitness Professional has put forth hours of academic study and hands-on experience. For instance, The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) are examples of widely respected organizations.
